LOTHIAN, Md. (WUSA) -- Several firefighters fell and were injured as the floor of a home collapsed while they were battling a two-alarm fire at a large house in Lothian Md., Wednesday afternoon.  Two of those firefighters were taken to area hospitals with injuries they sustained in the fall.

Anne Arundel county fire rescue crews remained on the scene late into the afternoon, and a number of fire-rescue units from Prince George's county and Calvert county also responded to assist them.

Flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the two-story home, located in the 5800 block of Little Road. The fire was first reported at about 1:30 p.m. Firefighters were dispatched for the report of a chimney fire, and reported heavy smoke conditions throughout the building.  One person who was home at the time was able to get out of the house.

Additional resources were requested to the scene. Firefighters began an interior fire suppression effort inside the home. Fire officials tell 9NEWS NOW the fire started in the basement of the 2-story home, but the flames spread quickly. At some point the first floor collapsed, and five firefighters fell through the floor into the basement level of the home. A mayday alarm was sounded. Three of those firefighters were able to get themselves out of the basement, but two others were injured in the fall, and had to be rescued by their fellow firefighters.

A 24-year-old firefighter received serious but non life-threatening injuries and was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the Medstar unit of the Washington Hospital Center.  The other injured firefighter received minor injuries and was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick.  No civilians were injured.

There is no information available yet on the cause of the fire or the estimates on the damage it caused, but its quite evident that extensive damage was done to the house.
